What is the Role of the Assessor?
Who does the Assessment?
In the Assisted Deputyship Application program, skilled psychologists working in organizations catering to individuals with special needs are able to conduct mental capacity assessments. These organizations encompass various services such as SPED schools, Sheltered Workshops, and Day Activity Centres, among others.
Why the Psychologist?
Psychologists play a pivotal role in safeguarding the rights and well-being of individuals facing cognitive impairments or mental health challenges. The extensive training in psychology, equips psychologists with the unique ability to understand human behaviour, cognition, and emotional processes.
This training, enables psychologists to approach the mental capacity assessments holistically, considering not only cognitive functioning but also emotional well-being, social context, and individual preferences. This comprehensive understanding allows psychologists to evaluate an individual's capacity to make crucial life decisions in a manner that is sensitive to their unique circumstances.
How is this role important?
This role is not merely about administering assessments, but about providing compassionate support, supporting informed decision-making, and balancing independence while protecting individuals from potential exploitation or undue influence. By embracing our role in conducting mental capacity assessments, we uphold the highest ethical standards, promote social justice, and champion the rights and dignity of those who are most vulnerable.
